US 4,761,785 "Parity Spreading To Enhance Storage Access" filed by Clark et al of IBM in 1986 patented the technology that is RAID 5 As of late 2017 it was cited in 398 subsequent patents. It issued in August 1988.
Discussion:
IBM implemented RAID 5 well after the filing date, first in AS400 software in the early 1990s and then in 1992 as a hardware implementation in the 9337 disk storage subsystem..
